P. Ramachandran, started Jyothy Laboratories in 1983 with a capital of Rs 5,000 with a single product, Ujala, and five employees.
Ramachandran operated with two maxims: He never relied on debt and ploughed back all his profits into the business.
From a proprietary concern making a single brand, Jyothy has become a multibrand company manufacturing and marketing fabric whiteners, mosquito coils, soaps, detergents and incense sticks.
In 1997 when the company raked in Rs. 100 cr in sales, it spent Rs. 36 cr on advertising. Almost 1.2 million bottles of Ujala is sold on a daily basis, and it reaches almost 60 percent of Indian households.
He was also responsible for the company acquiring the loss-making Henkel India and turning it around in three years.
